It can be terrifying and nerve-racking to start your own business. And you might feel completely out of your comfort zone. But at the same time, you might also feel the thrill – and feel amazing and liberated!
Are you considering starting your own business? Birgitte Vestergaard, managing director at BGRAPHIC chose to become self-employed 17 years ago. And she has never looked back!
Here you have Birgitte’s five pieces of advice on how to be successfully self-employed:
The assignments will come if you make sure to use, maintain and sustain your network – and keep adding more people to it.
A recommendation from a happy customer or colleague is powerful, and that’s the reason many assignments are results of a strong network. Many assignments come from 2nd, 3rd or 4th degree connections in your network.
It applies for both your work life and your personal life. When you’re self-employed you might find it challenging to strictly separate when you are working, and when you are just yourself.
But it’s important to distinguish between the two. It makes sure you have a productive working day, when you’re working – during the day. And that you can relax, when you’re off. Everyone has to charge their batteries sometime.
And allow yourself an off day. You don’t have superpowers, and it’s completely normal that some days are tougher than others.
It’s okay! Tomorrow is a new day – with new possibilities and energy.
You have to be realistic, but at the same time you should dare to dream big! This is your chance to create an amazing business – do what you love to do, create wonderful solutions!
Make sure to get help, before you’re knocked down. It’s okay to ask for help. Even though you’re self-employed, you don’t have to be able to do everything yourself.
Ask yourself what you need. You can hire great employees, or you can book freelancers for whatever it is you need. It’s amazing to work with someone else, so you have someone to talk to about the solutions.
At BGRAPHIC, we meet entrepreneurs all the time. We often design new logos, business cards and websites for new businesses. Often in combination with a social media strategy so you’ll quickly be able to spread the word about your business. And in combination with a nice and simple PowerPoint presentation, so you can present yourself and your company to possible clients. It’s always an interesting process to help start up a company.
Often, we also offer meetings and workshops in the beginning, where we can help plan and organise your products and services, define your target groups and future clients as well as pricing of your services in order for your business to be a success.
